Tips for driving in tunnels

How to drive through tunnels safely

  • Turn on your radio to listen to tunnel safety warnings and emergency information
  • Take your sunglasses off (unless they are prescription glasses)
  • Pay attention to the messages displayed on the electronic message boards
  • Avoid changing lanes
  • Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you
  • Turn your headlights on to enhance visibility
  • Do not use tunnels if you drive an over-height vehicle
  • Ensure your load is safely secured, especially in open tray vehicles

Variable speed limits operate on the network and are enforced. Speed cameras are located in toll road tunnels and link to variable speed limit signs. These are operated and maintained by Roads and Maritime Services.
